Catalysts for desulfurization are primarily cobalt and molybdenum on alumina, or nickel and molybdenum on alumina.
The alumina -usually in the form of cylindrical extrudates- is prepared under controlled conditions to reach the required surface area, pore volume, and the specific pore size distribution.
There are in the market also extrudate catalysts in shape form, such as trilobes, quadrilobes, etc. These new forms are claimed to reduce the pressure drop and to give increased superficial surface for a given nominal extrudate diameter.
Typical composition and properties of desulfurization catalysts are:
Nickel or cobalt oxides 3-6% wt
Molybdenum oxide 10-20% wt
Surface area 180-250 m
2/g
Pore volume 0.3-0.5 mL/g
Crushing strength 0.8-2.0 kg/mm
Attrition loss <2% wt
Although the catalysts are prepared in the oxide form the active form is the metal sulfide. Sulfiding can be done on site or by the supplier as pre-sulfiding. Catalyst suppliers give advice on how to commission the units to achieve optimum activity in each and every case.
