As far as I know, the NDS does not permit any withdraw value for a nail driven into the end of a member, parallel to the grain. (I'm always a couple of codes behind when it comes to wood, so I may be wrong.) But my question is: do they have any exception for a temporary situation in (say) freshly milled wood (or a particular grade)? (My understanding is that this is in the code because wood can split/crack longitudinally down the line.) Thanks.

The code does not allow it but they do have some strength. I remember when I was a carpenter years ago and they had just got to using 16d ring-shanked nails. We drove one all but 1" into the end of a 2x4 and no one could pull it out.
