Does anyone know if the 316 SS spring can be used as-is or does it need to be annealed to 22 HRC?

Springs are a special case, but if you really need resistance in Cl and/or H2S environments do not use 316. By definition springs are working at a high percentage of yield strength. You could use annealed 316, but it wouldn't be much of a spring.

And long ago the MR 01-75 committee did not consider a spring to be a pressure containing part. And austenitic stainless was not considered . But now the ISO influence has changed things. That is the spring is not a problem but it may not conform to the current NACE.
