Hi Gents

What are the requirements for cable hipot test ? when a cable should be hipot tested ?is that true that after determination of a cable (specially MV cable)to terminate that again it must be hipot tested ? is there any code regarding that ?

Thanks .

There is no NEC requirement, assuming you are in the US.

Cable testing has become controversial. A search of this forum should turn up a lot of threads related to this.

My advice is to consult with cable manufacturer. They made the cable and will generally provide free advice on how to test.

It would help to know what country you are in and what type and voltage cable you are asking about.

Canada and cable is MV cable rated for 5 KV .

that is a existing non-shielded cable rated for 5-8 KV , that is all information i have , its part of retrofit i am planning to get down as soon as i take the bus down.

I've not heard of hipot testing for unshielded cable. Probably contacting the manufacturer is your best bet.

Why are you looking to test the cable? Tan Delta will give you information on the dialectric loss of the cable, how old is the cable and what sort of insulation is used?
