I'm basically an artist who knows nothing at all about acoustics. I would really appreciate any website links where I might find some 'beginner basics' on acoustics. I'm interested to creating various sound environments where the sounds which people naturally make e.g. footsteps, whispering, talking etc. are amplified at various levels etc. Anything which relates to that very crappy explanation would be fantastic. Thankyou very much!

I recommend the following text:

Alton Everest, The Master Handbook of Acoustics,
4th edition (September 22, 2000),
McGraw-Hill Professional Publishing; ISBN: 0071360972

Sincerely, Tom Irvine

A good introductory book on the subject is Music, Physics, and Engineering by Harry F. Olson. (ISBN 0486217698). This is an inexpensive <$15 paperback published by Dover Publications.
