Hello,
I am working on a multimedia filter design and requires air scour for backwashing the filters. I am wondering if the lateral underdrain can be used for the purpose of air scouring rather than supplying a separate distributor inside the vessel. I understand that a typical multimedia filter has different designs for the underdrain and the air distributor and I assume that the air distributor is designed in a way to provide uniform air distribution. Would the lateral underdrain serve the same purpose?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi:

I used this air/water wash tile with IMS cap many years ago in a 43 usmgd wate plant I designed 15 years ago very successfully in the Toronto area. We did separate air scour washes. The double orifice arrangement spreads out the air and water throughout the filter bed

There are companies out there right now that are promoting simultaneous air scour/water wash. I have not heard good stories and I would check it out thoroughly before considering them.

Having a separate air header laid on top of the filter requries the air flow in each of the drop legs to be balanced

The lateral underdrain is designed for the collection of a fluid not air and therefore will not work for the distribution of air.

There are many equipment suppliers in the market that have developed various solutions. These system consist of a series of small air pipes with diffusers in the under-drain or above the under-drains
