What test can be performed to determine the allowable compression strength of multi-wythe clay masonry walls?

Testing the unit masonry, or testing the mortar joint? You have to select a sample from an 'out of the way' location since it will be damaged. An out of the way location may not be representative of the rest of the wall.

A tensile test is far more difficult since there can be a huge variation throughout the structure. I don't know why this would be required, for flexure perhaps? Best to try to avoid it.

I've attached a paper I did 'over the years'... it started out as 3 pages.

If you are looking for in-situ tests you want to use ASTM C1196 and/or C1197. These are flat jack tests to determine an approximate strength of the existing assembly. They are specialized tests so make sure you work with a consultant that has experience with them.
