Does anyone have knowledge of the MTBE process itself works in refinery operation or know where to find info on web or other sources (e.g. magazine articals). The more descriptive the better. I'm doing safeguarding mitigation and need to know as much as possible about this.

Every MTBE unit was built based on a licencing document that has all the information you need: design data and an operation manual. Your refinery should have this documentation wherever thay keep the design documents. Otherwise, you need to know whose licenced process is in use in that refinery and go back to licensor. There were only two or three of them. CD Tech in Houston sold most of the MTBE licences in the early nineties but there were a few others.

Depending upon the process, the feed could have used the Houdry or Catofin technology with sequential switching of batch reactors.

in europe, most used proces is the edeleanu MTBE license with only the UOP license any remarkable competition. it is a catalyzed process in liquid state, feedstock is normaly C4 from FCCU and Methanol. it is a low pressure (below 20 bara) low temperature (below 65 °C) although higher temps are beneficial. Catalyst is an acidic ion exchange resin.

for further details, you really have to do a patent research. companies are not very free with info about their processes.

hth,
chris
