Movie Studio DC Power

I am going to be designing the power distribution system for a movie studio (sound stage). We have been told that in addition to the normal 120Y/208V AC supplied for production lighting, several thousand amps at 120V DC is required for additional lighting of some type.

Does anyone know just what type lights or other equipment requires 120V DC and what type dimmers are used with them? I can understand DC to prevent filament sing in incandescent stage lights but then why have both AC & DC supplies?

Also, if anybody has done this type of project, where do they normally get this tremendous amount of DC from? Motor generator sets? Static converters? Diesel generators? The Energizer Bunny?

Woodrow, I've never done anything for a movie studio, but realistically a 200 or 300 kW, static, 12 pulse, rectifier is not that big. Many manufacturers would be able to supplu these.

The flicker in 60hz lighting would be visible on the film?

I believe they traditionally have used MG sets but I'd agree with sibeen that a 12-pulse rectifier should be suitable.
