Could someone explain the difference is between a regular motor and a servomotor?

Regular motor is essentially for regular load. Usually, it is three-phase, squirrel-cage induction motor.
Servomotor is for positioning, motion controls, speed control, etc., i.e. for more demanding operational duties. It usually has a smaller HP ratings; however, some servomotors can have large HP ratings too. It can be AC and DC.
Visit some web site to get more info:
etc. for more info. Especially good is to visit Servomotor forum which works similarly as this one and post all kinds of specialized questions.
