Mossing?

I was out inspecting a 60 cell string today and found 7 cells that had a gray like material (a little darker shade than the negative plates) on the bottom of the cells. The material had the consistency of a sponge and was under both the positve and negative plates. Could this be mossing? I thought mossing normally shows up on top of the plates not the bottom. The cells are approximately 15 years old and had a capacity of 102% during the last capacity test in 2001. Any ideas what the gray material might be?

Sounds like normal sheding of the active matierial caused by cycing and normal aging process, as it comes into contact with the negative it will turn to grey. You did not specify the amount and the coverage area. If you are having excessive bluild up in these cell it might be due to soft positive plate.

I would like the formula for making lead acid "JELLY" electrolyte. something consisting of available materials and not stuff like the scrapings of fish entrails as described in bygone patents
