Now, I've discovered that inserting an assembly level cut removes 2-D materials that intersect the cut. 3-D materials, however, are fine. SPR time. Unless anyone's got a workaround?

Perhaps I didn't express myself very well. Within photoworks, there are materials that when applied, apply by default to a body, and then there are those that apply by default to a face. For instance, if you go into the organic materials, wood, pine, it includes "unfinished pine" and "unfinished pine 2d".

That is actually incorrect. At an assembly level its either parts or sub-assemblies. Only in parts are there Bodies or multiple bodies.

So if Photoworks materials are added at the assembly level you have a choice to select it as the assembly or the part by selecting the icon (assembly or part) in the selection portion of adding a material at the assembly level. That is how its controlled. If you want to use PW materials from the part that you already selected, then you don't need to do anything, but control the scene and lighting.
