Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum and relatively new to the engineering field I have been working in the field for about a year now. I am in charge of a project which is looking at different metals to be welded or coated on a runner that is involved in aluminum casting. The erosion on the runners is pretty extreme, we are looking at trying to reduce it. Currently the runners are made of H13 tool steel with a coating of beryllium cooper. I have looked into ceramics as well but I can't find any good information right now. If anyone has places I can find some good information please anything would help.

You can try a high temperature refractory coating. Usually the refractory is applied by trowel and cured before use. You can search for refractory suppliers and inquire for the specific material in contact with molten aluminum.
 
The biggest issue with the spray or paint on coatings commonly used for low pressure (permanent mold) operations is they wear off too easily in a diecasting runner, if that is what you are referring to, you didn't specify. Biggest factors you may be able to control outside of the coating- metal temperature, flow velocity, and how dramatically the flow changes direction when it reaches the runner/ problem area.
