how to model sands in nonlinear fashion? Linear-elastic models and elasto-plastic with Mohr-Coulomb failure seems to me less acurate in many cases. What is your point of view or experience?

 
Hi coopernik,

I think classical elasto-plastic model with strain softening behavior would be better, or other model introducing strain softening would also be ok. About the limit stress (failure) condition Mohr Coulomb or Druker Prager or Matsuoka Nakai will be ok.

Critical-State based model is fine particulrly if your sand is under drained phenomena
 
I don't understand how one could model a sand (which is non-cohesive) non-linearly. It seems the only variable is angularity.
 
Hi LCruiser,

You're right that angularity of particles is one of the variables that could lead to the non-linearity of displacement field of sand layer. Other variables are the void ratio, the current (stress) pressure, grain size, and the constraint deformation of particle itself.
