Greetings,
Iam trying model a Lap joint with High strength frcition grip bolts in Nastran. My intrest is to get the frictional frces developed between the two plate interfaces. Could any one suggest me as to how i can go about modelling and what element i need to use for the same. The plates are subjected ti inplanes forces.
thanks in advance
regards

There are no special elements that will model bolted joints in nastran as far as I am aware. There are two approaches:

1. Use a beam representing the bolt with contact gaps between the mating surfaces of the joint. Friction is created when the beam has a preload applied. This will probably have to be done with temeratures, rather than a direct force. This is a reliable method but the greatest difficulty is getting the basic Nastran contact element to converge with friction. Make sure you have enough disk and RAM.

2. Model the geometry of the bolt and the surrounding region in solid elements. This will take a lot longer. Contact gaps will still be required and there will be many more interfaces to consider. The preload will still have to be applied somehow.
