Hello everyone. I am trying to model a coating sandwiched between two plates in Abaqus and running a 2d simulation, so I cannot use SKIN. I was thinking of inputting the coating as a cohesive element. Is that accurate?
Yes, it seems that the best option is to use cohesive behavior. Either surface-based (ignorung coating’s thickness) or element-based (assuming finite thickness of the coating).
Have you done anything similar like this before regarding modelling coating as a cohesive element? I mean all I need to do is run a shear test and get the correct parameters for my model, but I am honestly not sure if that would be an accurate way to model coatings. I could not find any journal papers to do such a thing, and even the documentation doesn't talk about that.
It depends on the properties of the coating. Apart from modeling this layer with 2D solid elements (not always possible depending on the costing’s thickness), there’s one more approach. Sometimes such very thin layers in 2D models are simulated with beam elements.
