Hello, wondering if it is possible to create a plate assembly in staad it is a connection detail for my model where my supports would be located.

Yes. But most likely your results will be really bad. Theres alot that goes into getting a multi-material, multi-interface fea model to give you good results.

For example, would you model the welds? If not how would you represent them perhaps as a contact. Then how do you get the forces to design the weld?

Also how will you account for prying, bearing only contacts (slip planes), and other items that come into connection design?

The industry is coagulating around what is called component based finite element models for these more sophisticated and complex models. I think you will be hard pressed to attempt one in staad or any other basic structural fea tool.

I think if you were to provide more info about the specific conditions you are seeking to model you can get better responses from the forum.

What part of it are you hoping to get more info on? This seems like it'd be faster and less trouble to do myself than with STAAD. If there's only a handful of them, it's also likely a situation where overbuilding, maybe throwing in a couple of gussets and conservative math is cheaper than complicated analysis.

You can model this in STAAD, but whether it'll be helpful depends on what you want out of it. You'll have to do your own interpretation of the results to work with the horizontal to vertical joint if it's carrying moment in the weak axis of the vertical plates. You may have to play with the geometry and mesh to get information around the cut out. If you're thinking of modelling the holes, that's fiddly and you might get stress concentration issues there.

STAAD is okay with some types of shells and some types of plate structures, but it's got some real limitations on analysis and reporting in this area.

If you're looking to verify assumptions about force flow, deflection or stiffness compatibility stuff, then there might be value there.
