What factors and approaches should I consider in designing a mobile overhead crane? The finished product should be able to be disassembled for transport. Also, the crane should be able to move around on wheels and allow for vertical adjustment. My biggest concern is determining what kind of material to use given that the maximum load will be 6,000 lbs (that is – being able to carry 6,000 lbs over 25 ft) and the safety factor will be ~3.

Just hoping for a few inputs to get me started.

Thank you,

Nick

Are you talking about a crane that will travel on wheels or tracks on the floor, or travel on a beam in the ceiling?

The crane should have wheels so that it can travel on the floor.

You can maybe get some info from Crane Manufacturers Association of America (CMAA) or from their member companies. However, they mostly cover overhead bridge cranes & some gantry cranes. Couldn't find mobile cranes.

You should find out as much as possible from mfrs. of mobile cranes 'stingers' and other truckmounted cranes.

ISO seems to have a lot of relevant standards (below), but of course you have to pay:
