I am trying to determine the best weld call out for mitered stair stringers. What is typically called out for this type of weld assuming full pen?

After conversations with several fabricators, I stopped specifying, I just put a single vee grove on the outside. They would change it to their preferred if they wanted, I checked what they provided on the detail drawing.

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

I guess no matter what the weld has to be back-gouged for this situation, no?

Toad, it's either back-gouged or an unsightly back-up strip.

Check you stresses. Do you need a complete joint penetration weld? If you do, the you will likely need to add stiffeners in the web to resolve the flange forces (since the "beam" has a knee in it and the flange forces don't cancel out).

Hopefully you don't need the full strength of the member. Even when I don't need the full strength in the weld I still spec it as a CJP single bevel. The shop can decide what is the best weld for them

I used full strength because I wanted to seal the joint.

p.s. How does kikflip get a star for that post? LOL

If you join eng-tips twice, under 2 different names, you can award yourself stars.
