Mimetic Material

I am writing a project report on drag reduction using mimetic materials like "sharkskin". Please could you anyone tell me if such texture material have been imprinted (surface texturing) or coated onto components

All of the cases that I know of used a plastic film with such a texture to overlay the actual structural materials.
I suppose that such a texture could be rolled onto metal coils, but it would be difficult to keep the exact texture required.
