MicroSoft Optical Mouse 5000 Review

I opened the box & loaded the software right after lunch today... So far - I like this mouse. I can get the same functionality that I'm used to with my old Intelimouse Explorer. Want to hear something funny...? The box says "MicroSoft Optical Mouse 5000"... but if you look on the bottom of the mouse... it says "Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0" This explains why I had a hard time finding a "new" version of my old mouse. What's the dang deal on that anyway? (That's a vague Earl Pits reference.)

The size of this one is comprable to my old mouse... but it's a little flatter. I should have kept the MX610 to compare the size. It could just be my bias... but I think this one is a little larger.

I was able to program the side-scroll on the wheel of the MX610... I don't think I can with this mouse. That gave me 2 more buttons & I got used to it real quick. I think I could get any possible CNTL, SHIFT or ALT key-strke possible with the MX610. That's definately not a deal-breaker though... this mouse has plenty of buttons for me.

But I think I'm going to miss the clicky wheel...

Sort of. Just thinking of the folks who post item-specific threads (such as reviews or specific areas of interest) who have more details on their own blogs off-site. With all the mouse stuff you're checking out/reviewing, it's starting to look like a good fit.

OK... I like this mouse. I picked up another during lunch today for my co-worker. He already likes it too. And I've already gotten used to the smooth wheel (no ratchet). Some folks complain about the additional effort required to press the wheel "button"... but I suppose my wheel finger has been so superbly conditioned from years of nose-picking... I never really noticed.

This one is a "bargain" price... $40. The only downside is that there's no recharging cradle. But these are supposed to have excelent battery life. I suppose I'll be buying some rechargeable batteries in a month or 2.

BTW... I looked at the MicroSoft LASER Mouse 6000... but didn't like the ergonomics of it. And I'm guessing only serious gamers need that level of resolution. We just ZOOM IN... duh.

So there's my REVIEW... for what it's worth.

FYI... I'm also playing with a LogiTech Marble Mouse... just to satisfy my curiosity. Maybe I'll review it next week.

Hey, remember when all mice had a little ball on rollers that would get all dirty? And you had to use some idiot's mouse that never cleaned the rollers? And it felt all jerky and bumpy and nasty to use? That's how a clicky mouse wheel feels to me now.
