Micro Profile Measurement of Asphalt Surfaces

Does anyone know of a technique to measure the local (micro) surface profile of an asphalt area approximately 24" square. I would like an output of the average RMS values for the measured area. The equipment needs to be portable (hand carried). I am investigating the relationship between surface roughness and tire grip.

Any help will be most appreciated.
