We are building a machine component with a 0.04 inch interference (32 finish)fit on a 94 inch diameter. One part is aluminum and one part is steel. In the pursuit of protection against Stress Corrosion cracking, galvanic corrosion, etc we will be painting or chromate conversion coating the aluminum, and painting the steel.

I am very reluctant to shrink a part on to a painted diameter.
I want metal-to-metal, with a plan to seal the edges of the joint, or maybe use wome wicking grade LOCtite film to try to seal the assembled joint.

I'm having a hard time finding justification for insisting on naked metal. I've looked in a few pump and motor installation documents.

Does anybody know of some published sources specifying bare metal?
