168 on board and no injuries: Says something for the merits of strapping passengers into their seats (compare recent urban light/heavy rail accidents).

I quite fancy the recovery job as a spectator sport.

It is interesting that it has gone off at the end where it should have been going relatively slowly. Short of there being some major mechanical glitch , i would expect that they landed long and then ended going too fast and heavy braking they have lost control or deliberately ground looped to avoid a run off the end which is not much better than where they have ended up.

It could have been much worse.

I was on a fight once that apparently landed on a runway which was either shorter than the pilot thought it was or he landed further down the runway than planned, and they had to apply full, wheel-locking brakes and still had to make what I assume was a much harder turn than normal at the end of the runway. Needless to say, the passengers were a bit shaken. This was not a big jet but one of the older model 737's.

I once saw an Islander make a 90 degree turn at full throttle part way through his take-off run. He continued to a successful take-off.

If your runway slopes downhill, you need less length for takeoff and landing...

Well at least the pilots kept it on land, that's much better than many pilots have done flying in/out of JFK in NYC.

It sounds as if you've also been to Tagbilaran Airport (Bohol, Philippines) on a heavily-loaded 737, before they significantly lengthened the runway to 2500m. ;-)

The angle isn't quite as steep as some of the news images seem to show. Makes one wonder about news organizations.

Pilot to Co-Pilot (when plane comes to a stand-still): "Wow! That has to be the shortest runway I've ever had to land on!"
Co-Pilot to Pilot: "Yes, but look how wide it is!"

OR:

Control Tower to Pilot after landing: "Turn left at the end of Runway 29 to approach the terminal area."
A few seconds later: "Oops! Disregard previous instruction ... turn right at the end of Runway 11."

Actually it was Flint, Michigan back in the late-70's.

What about crushable concrete? Or has that all been removed?
