In light of the housing market and the overall condition of the economy, I'm actually surprised to hear other local professionals tell me that their workloads really haven't skipped a beat.

At my firm, however, we've noticed a quick decline in the number of billable projects. Almost zero residential work, and the remainder is commercial. We have a history of rejecting proposal requests for government and healthcare projects, and I'm pretty certain we'll finally start suffering the consequences for it.

Anyways, this is all in Florida. How are things looking everywhere else?

We are quite busy.

We don't do residential so that may be why our workload is not being affected by the economy (knock on wood).

We do a lot of commercial, which includes healthcare, secondary and university work. We do a little bit of government work - mainly at a local AF base.

Things are very busy in the SW US, but I would say it is primarily a smaller number of very large industrial projects, rather than a lot of smaller industrial projects. Most of the action is in new technologies, and the oil companies are also very busy.

Ditto the mid-south. The industrial and oil sectors have been humming for a while and are still blazing along at a good clip. Salaries remain high because the supply of qualified engineers is painfully low for the amount of work we have.

We primarily focus on resturant and retail with some office build-out thrown in for good measure. With our mix we've managed to stay busy however a couple of large MEP houses and a few that did most of their work in retail have laid off large portions of their staff. I guess the good news is in talking with one of the temp agency reps, technical talent gets placed quickly.
