Hi All,

First of excuse me for my noob query,

I know what a simple stress means. And what a Bending stress means.

What I donot understand is what is Membrane, Membrane plus Bending, General & Local Primary stresses are. Can anyone please consider this as a request and help me to point in the right direction by explaining in a simple way?

Many Thanks,

When we use the term bending stress, what we really mean is a distribution of stress through-thickness that is equivalent to that produced by pure bending. Therefore, of you think of a non-uniform stress distribution through the thickness of a plate (of shell, or nozzle, etc), then it can be separated into several components. The average stress of that distribution is the membrane. The linearized equivalent will have a membrane and bending component.

These definitions are the same no matter where in a pressure vessel they occur. Whether a certain stress is general or local depends solely on the location AND the source of the stress (the particular load). Table 5.6 will assist you with this categorization.

These may be noob questions, but I think that it is good that you are asking. Keep asking.

TGS4, thanks for your prompt reply.I can understand what you are explaining.
