Hello All,
I am new to designing with glass and I would like to get some input on attachment methods for mass production of a assembly for a consumer product. The preliminary design is a 1/4 metal rod threaded into the center of a 3 inch diameter x 1 inch high glass cylinder. There is a raised boss inside the center of the cylinder with and internal thread to attach the rod. Several competitive products use Borosilicate glass, so it would be a starting point. The rod-glass joint would have repeated cycles of approximately 0.5-5 lbs of tension. At this point the force and dimensions are an approximate and just to get a feel for the design parameters and scale, so an analysis has not been done yet. Before I get too deep into the design I would like to know if and what type of internal threads manufacturable. What threads should be used to reduce notch sensitivity in glass for a repeated loads? And lastly, if there is a problem with this design, what would be some recommended attachment methods?
