Hello all,

I am looking to take a course in mechanical fasteners. I have found two courses.

The first is the one offered by the SAE, here is a link to it.

The second is by a company called seminars for engineers, here is a link to it.

Have any of you taken either course?

I would appreciate any thoughts on how much you felt either course taught you, how in depth it was, how engaging it was (did you fall asleep?), would you recommend it to someone else?

Thanks for any replies!

There is a third one taught by Prof. Sayed Nassar:

They are all essentially the same. The instructors are knowledgeable and engaging. They provide a bound volume to take with you, which is a large collection of photocopied items that they have created or found over the past decades. These documents are a little disappointing in their quality considering the cost of the classes.

If I had to choose one, I would probably go with the one by Bengt Blendulf.

Are these courses leaps and bounds better than the bolt science on-line stuff?

Cheers

I think the courses are much better because you are immersed in the information for an entire day and take with you a more comprehensive reference. I think Mr. Eccles of Bolt Science is comparable to the instructors of these classes.

I took the SAE course by Prof. Comer. I found it to be interesting and worthwhile. He is a good instructor, and the course materials are good, but not great. You will definitely get exposure to all the important points. I have seen the course materials for the other two as well, and they are similar in scope. Probably any of the three will provide you with what you want: an introduction to fasteners and fastened joints presented by an expert. Prof. Nassar is probably the most accomplished university researcher in the world on this subject, and Mr. Blendulf has a career's worth of practical experience, so take that into consideration as well.

Going on what GregLocock asked, I also saw the bolt science course online, any of you taken that, any comments on its quality?

ASME has a pretty good on-line course.

Have worked with Bolt Science on a past project, I don't think you'd go wrong.

Regards,

Mike
