Hi All,

I'm looking for suggestions on how to measure the force required to rotate the layer of a Rubik's cube. I'd like to get pretty precise feedback on how the force varies as the layer is being turned. I assume I need to buy or build some kind of motorized torque meter, but most of what I'm seeing online is expensive and designed to deal with more torque than I need.

I'd prefer to hack something together with a sensor and a microcontroller, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Figure out how to do it with small motors and the requisite gear train then measure the motor current. Calibrate the system with a scale prior to using it.

If only there was some sort of wrench... that could measure torque... a torque wrench, as it were...

As The Tick mentioned, I would get a dial torque wrench in small units such as in-lb (or smaller). Make an adapter that can grip the perimeter of one layer of the cube and start taking measurements.

lhenke,

How about a ruler and a fish (weighing) scale?

Some Rubik Cubes have detents to hold there positions. You will have to measure the torque to overcome this. I suppose you could consider this your static friction force and add it to your moving friction force.
