Good day,

I would like to ask for the maximum weld deposit per pass when using GTAW process. I know that filler metal size and travel speed matters but I want to know which international codes specify the maximum weld deposits in each weld pass.

Thank you.

ASME Codes do not limit weld pass thickness for a given process; however passes > 1/2" thick require qualification.

Thanks for the response weldstan.

What about combination of welding process (ex. GTAW + SMAW)? When I witness WPQT, the GTAW was only 2 pass and SMAW the rest of remaining passes. How they range the thickness of GTAW in the WPQT? When I check the WPQT of our welders it shows (GTAW tested coupon = 5mm and range qualified = 10mm). By the way the test coupon is a 6" dia. pipe and 14.27mm thickness.

Qualified deposited weld metal thickness is 2 X the dwmt of each process. You must measure the thickness of deposited weld metal for the GTAW process and the remainder is the deposited weld metal thickness for the SMAW process.

thank you weldstan for sharing your knowledge!

I found this in ASME IX (QW-403.9 & QW-451)
