Assuming self-weight only, nominal lateral loads, and a deep wall, what's the longest you would ordinarily span a reinforced lintel/bond-beam?

Assume 8 inch 190mm blocks with single layer of reinforcing.

Much depends on:

1) is two or one sided arching action available?
2) where will the nearest control joints be?

In general, I try to stick to a span to depth ratio less than 15.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

5.4m is the longest I have seen and that was using a 600mm deep lintel block.

Probably like 15' w/ a 24" deep bond beam. Completely depends on the amount of load and triangulation happening above the opening. Like KootK mentioned you need to keep an eye out for control joints negating triangulation. Also need to pay attention to your deflection, I believe you need to keep under L/600.
