Hello
I am assessing a design of a small gear box for manufacturing. I noticed that if I follow the dimensions to the print for the shaft groove location lengths and the gear face width ( gear to be press fitted on shaft) then I end up with 0.010 Max. Intrerference to 0.020 max. clearance between the retaining ring and the gear face. I have considered the stack up of tolerance due to tolerances of ring width, groove locational tolerance and gear width tolerance.
If I reduce the gear width tolerance to 0.005" instaed of the present 0.020" then the Max. Interefernce 0.005" and Max. claearnce of 0.012" would result.
My question is for a press fitted gear with bearing supports at both ends of the shaft , what are desirable limits of max. interference and max. cleaance?
