I am preparing to do a short term trial (3 days) of a new chemical in an existing process. The chemical is oil based and contains ~ 2 ppm residual H2S in solution. Temperatures and pressures are low (near ambient) and water content is very low.

Is this enough H2S to be considered H2S service?

The existing system is mostly SS tubing, however there are other pieces of process equipment (pumps, valves, and vessels) that are a mix of other materials including CS and rubber. Do I need to be concerned with 2 ppm H2S ?

Thanks for your help!

I'll go out on a limb (unresearched) and say I don't think 2 PPM will cause a problem--unless it can somehow concentrate. By now you should have your test results.

Outcome?

2 ppm is nowhere near the definition of Sour Service.

I believe in general "oil-" can conceivably be a problem for "rubber" (I guess depending on what types and temperatures etc. the oils and rubbers are), but I am not sure this will be a practical problem if the oil will only be in contact with the rubber for a short amount of time. You may want to ask the manufacturer(s) involved.
