I am designing a cam with a oscillating follower, and am not sure what materials to use. The cam rotates 90-100 degees and oscilates back and forth every 3 sec, and raises a bar aproximately 1". My thoughts were to machine the cam from CR1018, and using a replaceable brass wear surface on the bar. What type of brass will provide a good wear surface against CR 1018? Will it be necessary to hardend the cam?

Have you calculated the P/V? Is it lubricated and what is the load?

P/V? There is no lubrication and the load is less than 5 lbs.

Any cam run without lubrication is going to wear. Could I suggest "Oil Filled Cast Nylon" available from McMaster-Carr for the follower.

I doubt any material will work without lubrication. The best you can get is line contact and most plastics do not do well in this type of application. A roller for the follower will work better.
