Hi, does anyone know of any reports, studies, textbooks, etc. that I could reference for the design, maintenance, and operation of journal bearings for vertical shaft machines? All of my textbooks focus more on horizontal axis machines, such as steam turbines, however I am looking for more information regarding journal bearings used for vertical equipment, such as hydro turbines. Thanks in advance!

I do not have access to any papers on the subject. Vertical shaft journal bearings are prone to oil whirl. A tri-lobe bearing with three axial grooves and three tapered lands is commonly used to stabilize a vertical shaft and avoid oil whirl. Do an internet search for "tri-lobe bearing" ,"vertical shaft", "oil whirl" and "journal bearing".

Thanks, I will give this a try!
