New at interpreting WPS. If a WPS states material thickness range 16-20 mm, can I weld a 15mm plate to a 20mmm plate?

When following a WPS, you cannot deviate outside of the specified parameters, so the answer to your question is no.

However, that is not to rule out the possibility that the WPS can be revised based on the supporting PQR and applicable Codes.

Thanks, what if we have a fillet WPS thickness range 5mm to 20mm. Can we weld 10mm to 30mm by fillet?

It depends on the welding standard invoked by the owner or customer.

Best regards - Al

Again, whether you're qualified to weld that thickness depends on the applicable Code/Standard/Spec, but if your WPS does not address a base metal thickness of 30mm, then no, you cannot weld a fillet on 30mm material.

OK What if you had one WPS thickness range 5-10mm and another WPS thickness range 15-20mm. Could you weld 6mm material to 16mm? why?

It depends on what welding standard or code you have to comply with.

Best regards - Al
