Masonry crushing

Is the only way to combat masonry crushing per ACI 530-11 equation 2-7 by increasing the diameter of your bolt? Can you justify excluding this failure mode in some way? I'm just trying to figure out how you get any decent capacity out of an anchor bolt in masonry when you have to check this code provision.

Masonry in bearing is garbage according to the code. Off the top of my head, allowable bearing is 0.25f'm. For 1500 psi masonry, the bearing capacity would be 375 psi.

Meanwhile, a piece of southern pine is 565 psi. Go figure.

The TEK manual has some charts for anchor bolts. You may need to used high strength grout or bigger / more bolts.
