I have a procedure that calls for a liquid nitrogen quench after quenching of maraging steels. I am assuming this is to remove retained austenite since, air cooling is adequate for the quench. Is a cryogenic cool typically done for maraging steels? If so, is it for retained austenite? How soon do we need to cryogenically cool after quenching to accomplish this?

Too add to metengr's post, the liquid nitrogen quench would not be for removing austenite, it is not typical, and it is difficult to say what time delay is acceptable without knowing more about why the liquid nitrogen process is used.
