Manhole provision for the underground pipeline

Could anyone tell me about the criteria for applying manhole for the underground pipe? on the questions below

1. Is there any recommendation, practice or standard specified that what the pipe size should be provided manhole(s)along the pipeline for maintenance purposes? 500 mm up ?
2. How length(in meter)of interval for each manhole is suitable for installation at the pipeline in practice regardless of any obstructions during pipe erection ?

Please give me some recommendations or suggestions

Our state dot has the following requirements for storm drain:

Minimum Pipe Size 24" (610mm) unless it is uppermost pipe in a system then 18" (458mm) may be used.

Maximum MH Spacing:
Under 33" -- 330'
33"-39" -- 440'
42"-69" -- 660'
72" +++ -- 1200'

I didnt convert the mh data to metric but this is what we use. Hope it helps. Does your governing entity have any requirements like this? Better Check if you do not know.

Thank you so much for your suggestion, but i'm afriad that it didn't hit my exact point so i would like to give more details for more clarity.
The undergroud pipe i mentioned is water pipe (etc circulating water), not a storm drain pipe. i'm not sure if spacing you suggested can be applied for a sort of this system, please confirm and is that's a Standard, AWWA ? Anyway it may be useful for me in the future.

I've been looking forward to any suggestions.

I think you are referring to valve box to be provided in a water supply line.In a large water supply line differernt types of valves are to be placed accoding to need.For example you may need Break Pressure valves,Air valves on highest points and scour valves etc.I remember a water supply which was located on a height but due to mistake no Break pressure vlves were provided.Consequently pipeline bursted at six places on inauguration.so valve chambers be suitably placed as per need.

There is a publication titled "Recommended Standards for Water Works" shich has been adopted by ten states in the U.S. and the Canadian province of Ontario. It recommends shut of valve spacing at no more than 500 foot intervals in commercial areas and at not more than one block or 800 foot intervals in other areas. (available at

As mubash said, there are other valve types to be considered.
