Make copied part independent

How do you make a copied part independent? That way you can edit it without all the other parts changeing as well.
 
Open a new drawing, copy the part, rename it within a new opened file, then copy and paste renamed file back to original drawing file. Hope this helps.
 
Thanks for the response. I have found that instead of copying the part, you can copy either instance or deffinition, I forget which one, and that makes the copied part act as an independent part.
