Has anyone had any experience with having to magnetize parts? I am trying a different kind of speed pick up on a test rig that requires a rotating magnetic field. A magnetized nut should do the trick. The problem is is that I can't seem to get even a plain carbon steel nut to magnetize. I have a Magnaflux inspection machine that I have been using to attempt magnetization, but absolutely no luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions? They'd all be much appreciated.

Plain carbon steel won't permanently magnetize: try with a high strength nut.

In order to magnetize screw drivers I simply coil
12 gage wire down the length, then momentarily
short the ends of the wire across a 12v automotive
battery. You need DC to do this & the wire WILL
get hot & melt if connected for too long. I mearly
scratch it on the battery terminals.
