ASME Section V, Article 7 describes the mag particle processes, but states all indications will be evaluated based on governing codes.
API requires mag particle inspection be done per their E709, which happens to be the same number as the ASTM Std, which also states indications will be evaluated based on "governing codes."

Can someone point me to codes appropriate for rotating machinery shafting?

thanks,

Dan T

Too broad of a question. You have aerospace acceptance standards, automotive acceptance standards and finally AWS D14.6.

This is for inspection during manufacturing of shafting machined from 12 inch diameter 1045 and 4140 shafts.

I'm going to get a copy of API RP 687. "Recommended practice covers the minimum requirements for the inspection and repair of special purpose rotating equipment rotors, bearings and couplings..."

Gonna track down that AWS reference for "...Fabrication, by welding, of wrought or cast material used to manufacture rotating elements of equipment such as fans, pumps, compressors, and centrifuges for power generation, propulsion, and material processing...." as it sounds very interesting, but maybe not applicable to a billet shaft unless (gulp) we are forced into weld repair of the "indications."

thanks

In shafts, you MT for cracks and seams. If shafts are forged, also check for forging laps.
