hi i think this is a fairly simple problem but the penny is not dropping at the moment.

i am currently designing a system where LTHW from CHP engines is to be used as domestic hot water before being returned to the engines at a suitable temperature. I need to calculate how much Steam Equivalent in tonnes is being saved (steam produced by combi boilers at 6 bar) by using the LTHW as a heat source instead. However i'm struggling to do this.

I have 939289 kWh of LTHW a month and I would like to know the steam equivalent in tonnes. 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ and q = mcpdeltaT are starting points i think. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Is all of this 939289kWH recoverable as steam ? Percentage recovery depends on the heat exchangers /boilers and the surface area provided, and also on the temperature of this waste heat stream / heat transfer properties of this waste heat stream.

What is LTHW ?

Find a saturdated steam table and lookup up the latent heat (kWh or equivalent) per pound at your steam systems operating pressure.

That will tell you how many pounds of kg of steam you had to make to get that same amount of heat from your steam system.
