On importing from another drawing, unable to manipulate text or treat the import as anything but single entity.

Importing with INSERT?
If so, it is a block. Explode it.

Double click it. If it's editable, then an edit box will pop up. If it's not, then an attritbute box will pop up which will tell you what it is.
