Hi, We are planning for an LPG Pipeline 12"x 400 KM. Due to the terrain conditions we are forced to lay the entire length of the pipeline along the High way and other country roads. My question is , "what are the advantages and disadvantages in laying a pipeline along the Roads?". If you had come across such situations please throw some light on Dos and Donts.
Thanks for your time.

It can be slow work due to other utilities in the area.
Typically deeper trench and multiple pipe handling is required.
You will have a tight spread, as long areas cannot be left open.
Potentially Lots of crossings and tie in interrupting continuous construction procedure.
Traffic control and worker safety can be a major issue.
Operation will require frequent routine monitoring.
Above ground installations require higher security.
High exposure to future third party damage.
Potentially more interference with cathodic protection currents.
Access is usually easier.

A 400km pipeline next to a road??

Where is this??

Advantages are that someone has already chosen the route for you and access is amazing.

disdvantage - The road is in the best location.

You will need to divert around any habitation / villages / towns and how you cross rivers, railways etc may be more difficult next to a road.

A lot will depend on the space available next to the road - 5m or 50m?

If you mean in the carriageway, then that's a whole world of pain and in construction terms somewhere between 5 to 10 times more than open cross country pipeline.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Thanks @Littleinch and @1503-44 (Petroleum)
Yes the Line is routed along the road but not in a single stretch. Your answers were helpful as an input to the feasibility report. Thanks for your time

Another thing is that often the road dept has ideas about making it wider in the future.

Other utilities also like laying alongside / inside roads ( water, sewer, electricity, fibre optics etc) so you compete with them for space.

The devil is in the detail of the space available.

Excuse me for repeating, I did a lot of pipeline failure analysis and don't underestimate the third party damage from future work by others in, or crossing the ditch. Also, they will probably mess with your cathodic protection.

Thanks for the responses. I am getting better clarity now. Over and above these I also felt that crossing of culverts and drains all along the road ROW is a pain. Every 100m we find a deeper drain crossing the pipeline at 90Deg which calls for too many Sag/ Over bends. The alignment might look like a sine curves finally.
Thanks again for your time.
