Hello,

I am looking for advice/tips in the following project: I intend to build a medium sign, about 8ft X 8ft, 10ft above the ground. I've done a bit of research, and I am concerned about properly calculating the wind loads and the design of the foundation (shape, materials, etc.).

Thought I have experience in mechanical/electrical design, I am a total newby on the Civil Engineering game - is there any literature (Engineering books/manuals/etc.) you would recommend that could help me? I would not expect that you write the entire design considerations, but if you know a good book that could point me in the right direction, that will help me out a great deal.

Thanks!

If this is a sign of particular importance, if it leans too much due to wind, I'd not try to do it. Instead, I'd hire a local civil engineer. Otherwise look to a local city engineer, power company distribution system engineer or other expert and ask them for advice for your situation. It may take nothing more than two psots in the ground. You should have soil information to begin with and local codes may have the wind loading information. I doubt that it would be worth while to look up a reference to answer the question yourself. Most of us do these designs only after having had a course on the subject.

Get a copy of the AASHTO Manual for design of sign structures and luminaires.

Google search "Structural Engineer in (insert your location here)"

Note that you appear to be practicing outside your area of expertise, and as such, you are possibly in violation of your state's professional engineering laws.
