I am looking for an article I saw many years ago. It was about a one story industrial building built with steel beam purlins sitting on top of rolled beam girders over the top of columns. There were no stiffeners or braces and the building collapsed from instability.

I think this might have been in an older textbook, perhaps from the 50's, 60's or 70's. Does anyone remember seeing this or know what book it may have been in?

Hi, jike,

I looked in my files and could not find an article I read about a supermarket roof collapse. As I recall, the issue was beam over column (with open web joists) construction was used, with no stiffener plates above the columns. A hinge formed at the top of the column, and the buckling force in the top of the column/bottom flange of the beam caused a failure.

Ever since I read that article, I always use stiffener plates over columns in this type of construction.
