I am looking for a way to quickly estimate the force required to press a dowel into a hole so I can select a properly sized press. I have the pin size and material of both pin and housing. I am an applications engineer preparing quotes for assembly equipment and the data I have to work with is often minimal or not exact yet I want to avoid oversizing and overpricing.

What size dowel, how tight, how long,
what material, how deep must it
penetrate?

This particular application it's a 10mm hardened steel dowel in a aluminum housing, 10H7 hole (+.015/-0). I have to assume a standard metric pin which I know is slightly oversized, +.012. Length of engagement is 12mm. I have to assume max. inteference of .012mm to size my press.
