So in the case of large timbers columns or beams, how much longitudinal 'splitting', parallel to the grain, is normal or acceptable before one needs to be concerned about the capacity of the memember? Is there some sort of reference or code requirement in this regard? These particular columns are 14" x 14" x 35', white pine and around 120 years old. Thanks.

a photo would help. i think it depends on how the member is loaded and whether the splitting is load related.

I have some notes on this. Ill see can i dig them up. Have you an email or such i could forward to, or is there some way to upload to here (they are most likely in PDF format)
