“Column lines shall be on no greater than 4'-0" (1.22 m) longitudinal centres”- I discovered a cooling tower specification for a new project with this sentence. What's the meaning?[ponder]

You are better off asking the writer of that specification directly.

I would interpret as limiting the structural support members to be no more than 4'-0" o.c. (on center)
